Modifying snap ring pliers to make Special Tools. The knurled jaws are made from 4140 steel and the pliers are most likely 1045 steel. I used inconel 82 for filler rod because I have welded lots of tool steel with it and because I have plenty that I bought for scrap. Otherwise, if I had to buy rod for this job, I would have used 309 or 312 stainless rod.

    That torch is perfect for what I want to do using my Miller Big D4 @ the lowest settings for lift start application when I have to weld really thin material. I don’t have a small machine…all I have is this Huge Miller Big D4. I know I can weld 18 & 20 gauge sheet metal & chrome moly tubing, etc…

    I’d be interested in seeing a video of the same weld being made with different rods, perhaps with some discussion of what the different types are *really* good for. For instance, I’d have not thought to try the inconel rod on tool steels, usually saving it for Ni alloys. What other tips you got?

    the jaws go inside an induction coil to locally heat the jaws so that the pliers are unaffected. Its a specialty but there are heat treat shops that do it.

    Every time I see this type of welding I can smell it. Maybe it was the argon gas I don’t know. It was over 25yrs ago. I use to weld these Stainless steel caps to the end of the tubes.
