Is there a solvent I can soak dirty tools in to clean them?

I have old gummed up, rusty, oily, dirty tools that I’d like to clean. Do they make some sort of liquid I can soak them in to remove all of that without eating away or messing with the integrity of my tools?

Get paint thinner from the hardware store. It is the closest thing to the solvent used in Safety-Clean parts washers.

  1. There are several brands available. go to a hardware store or auto supply store. Kerosene is also inexpensive and effective.

Be careful, Most of these are solvents and can catch on fire and can irritate the skin .and lungs.

  2. The best and easiest thing I’ve found is a spray-on foaming oven cleaner like "Easy-Off"
I place the tools on the driveway drain, spray, let them sit for 20 minutes, then hose them off. It also works well for cleaning car wheels.

  4. i use a mix of diesel 40% gasoline 20 % and soapy water and grime make up the other 40% in my wash tank. i just keep adding gas till its sludgy from filth, then drain clean and start over. the soapy water is just pure fire prevention.
basically 1:2 mix diesel with gas is fine. solvent is expensive and it evaporates.

  6. Try carb spray. They use to sell 5 gallon barrel chemtool to clean parts, think the EPA doesn’t like them anymore.

  7. kerosene is the simplist and often most effective. You could also buy a gallon of liquid wrench, but kerosene is what the pros use. Gasoline will remove all grease, but will destroy any plastic or rubber coatings or components …. and it’s dangerous to use.
